Happy baby

We found this at a garage sale. Baby loves it.

Egg on my face

Or maybe it is bread

sleep is good

still no time but i will update.

the baby slept through the night, 7pm to 7am. that is the first time. usually when she sleeps through it is until 6am, which is an hour too early for me. i am very happy with 7am. we are hanging out with larissa and donovan today so it should be a better day. i have a feeling the teething bit is not over so we will keep an eye on it. i must pack us up for the day. maybe i will remember pictures this time.

happy birthday dad

real quick:
  • the second tooth came in
  • i was tortured by my orthodontist for an hour
  • day two of 5k training was 12:07
  • the house is still a mess
  • we are spending the day at the annual Downtown Sidewalk Sale
i will send pictures.

i can run

i can't blog right now, i have too much to do! the car is still stuffed full of camping supplies, the kitchen is a mess, my bills are spread all over (i am organizing them!), the shredder died, and the baby has a new tooth. joshua wants help with the website, i want to finish my quilt, my brother and sister-in-law will be here next week, my dad and step-mom are coming soon to help with the irrigation system (thanks dad!). and i haven't a thing to wear. no seriously, it has been a good/bad week. we saw lots of relatives, my sister kept the baby all weekend, and did i mention audrey got her first tooth? all this and i picked today to start training for the tulsa run. i am going to do 5k on october 25, in bob's honor. it is the day after his birthday.

so today i ran a mile. and i did it in 12:37.

we are off

off to a family reunion. no, this is a family i like so it should be fun. yes, it is still a long drive. why yes, i am talking to myself today. but then that is what blogs are all about, me! or in this case audrey. speaking of lil miss, she is taking a decent 2nd nap, and the first one was pretty good as well. she must know something is up. i have been running around throwing items into bags and boxes all day. i will try to get up pictures while i am away but there is no telling if i will have a signal. the world may just have to wait on my blog until we return. kind of in a cocky mood today, aren't i?

10 July 2008

love the smell of yogurt in the morning, smells like, victory

finally, success with the yogurt. diana came over again and this time lent me a yogurt maker. it is not like a bread machine where you pour the ingredients in and walk away but rather a warmer after the hard part is done. if you are interested in the final recipe i posted it on another blog. i sat baby in her high chair for most of the yogurt time and she chased cheerios around the tray. some even made it in her mouth. diana's son ben had fun with the tupperware and magnets. when audrey dropped cheerios ben would eat them. fun was had by all. we also made hummus and i am in heaven. i will never buy it again now that i can make my own so easily. next i think will be sourdough. di has a recipe and i love sourdough. i may wait until i get caught up a bit. i have been behind on a few other things.

to sleep for me. joshua sleeps, audrey sleeps, my mother-in-law sleeps, and so should i.

Geese

Really hard to see them but I was not about to move closer. This is
the pond we stroll around.

hope on the horizon

things are slowly getting better with lil miss. we have been going for walks in the morning now. yesterday she meet a dog and today a flock of geese. i believe she enjoyed the dog more because the dog licked baby's feet. baby did not get to pet the dog because she was wet from her swim, the dog that is, but it was enjoyable all the same. she now makes a funny hacking sound for a laugh. i will try to record it sometime soon. geese pictures to follow.
we are getting ready for grandma's visit tomorrow. it will be a happy day when grandma arrives. someone else to hold the demanding child. and on saturday we will see the williams clan. i am sure aunt cheryl will be fighting for baby time as well. i may even get to sleep in. i can see the light at the end of the tunnel. today baby woke up at 6:15am. thats early in the morning folks. can i send her back for a later sleeping model?
now she naps so i must take better advantage of my free time.

New toy

Baby got a new toy which she loves. No bells or whistles just a
classic toy. Thanks Larissa.

morning

the baby sleeps and yet i do not. even joshua is asleep. however, the baby has been waking at 4am most days and now she has me trained. i really need to try to get out of that habit. the letting the baby train me part. and i do not care what joshua says, he snores. it may be cute, quieter snores but it is still snoring.

05 July 2008

have baby, will travel

joshua spent most of the day with baby and me. towards the end he asked, "has she been this way all week?" "worse," i answered. now he understands. my wrists hurt again from carrying her. i am looking to pick up one of those soft backpack carriers so that i can get on with my days. larissa let me try hers and it worked wonderfully. now to find one. i know i won't in this town. we may head to kc tomorrow. i am about to lose my mind. on a positive note, she is attempting to crawl again. it is quite adorable and i may record it.

a new day

happy friday! i got to sleep in. all is fine in larryville.
daddy took baby to the park, bought us cinnamon twists from great harvest and let baby have a piece of sourdough. i put her in her fourth outfit and promise to load pictures later. joshua has been working on larryville and should have it all upgraded soon. it really is looking like a professional site. i am still working an article for a new section of lawrencian. it will be a blog about homesteading. some of my girlfriends graciously agreed to help. if we become popular enough for the print version we may even get paid. more to come...audrey is fiesty right now.

03 July 2008

no yogurt for audrey

update on the yogurt. it failed me the second time. all i got was a runny mess. i hear that this can happen sometimes but i am still disappointed. i will try again, this time with a little powdered milk to thicken it. maybe the yogurt just felt my frustration and could not perform. it has been a bit of a rough week for audrey and i. we are just trying to get through the days. tomorrow the fireworks will be at clinton lake so maybe that will boost my spirits. or maybe it will just wake the baby and add to my angst. i choose to think positively. i will try to take pictures tomorrow of angel in her fourth outfit.

Baby overboard

Good thing she is strapped in.

showers in spokane

i spent quite a bit of time watering the lawn today. joshua has yet to install the irrigation system and has been too busy to care for our postage stamp sized yard. so the baby and i decided to help. we simply used the wand yesterday but today i felt the yard needed a good drink. i attached a sprinkler and moved it around every 15 minutes or so. and now it is raining.

its a tumor

my little growth has not let me put her down for more than 10 minutes at a time in days. there are no pictures because she is always in my arms. i am learning to type with her seated in my lap. i went to larissa's today just to have her child entertain mine so i could get some peace. we have not been doing much, trying not to suffocate in the humidity, grocery shopping, a little laundry, and dinner. i set her in the play yard so i could cook and she acted like i was abandoning her. she cried so hard her nose started to run and her eyes puffed up. i need to go now, audrey is crying.

30 June 2008

Our baby the vampire

Audrey likes beets same as her mom.

this means war

our family of three has been eaten by chiggers. joshua's answer is to scratch until the skin bleeds; the baby and i try to ignore the itching and act like it does not bother us. our neighbors are trying to spread a bug killer over the yard in an effort to kill them all. if it works we will be able to enjoy our summer, if not then the war will be on. details to follow.

29 June 2008

green is the new black

my neighbor came over to help me make yogurt last week. it was an idea i had because i was having trouble finding the baby yogurt at my local grocery store. she told me what ingredients to purchase and we set a date. i do not want you thinking i am a granola type: a vegetarian driving a hybrid who always recycles. maybe that is the woman i would like to be, however, life gets in the way for me. i try to recycle and i have a relatively fuel-efficient car. but i sometimes forget to bring my grocery bags when shopping and the baby and i drive around a lot. this makes me feel like i am ruining my child's future by poisoning the earth. so i stopped buying so much processed baby food and started shopping the farmer's market for local produce. last week it was turnips, the week before beets. and it really has not been that hard to turn the produce into baby food. all i needed was a blender or food processor and some encouragement. that came in the form of my neighbor, diana. she stopped by while i was writing this post. "people in tents make this stuff," she said. not the pureed produce but the yogurt. i am sure they use a mortar and pestle to process their veggies. however it is done, it is easy. so back to the yogurt. i picked up a small container of plain yogurt with live, active cultures and some milk. since this batch was for baby i got whole milk. i also cleaned a few of my canning jars to store the end product. diana came over and told me the plan. there was no recipe, just a little of this and some of that. for this batch we used almost an entire half gallon of milk and a 6 ounce container of yogurt. we first brought the milk to 200 degrees slowly and whisking the entire time. this keeps the milk from scalding. after we got the milk to 200 degrees we had to let it cool back to around 100 degrees before adding the yogurt. "so we do not kill the cultures," diana explained. i whisked the milk for the first half of the cool-down time and then let it alone. it took a little longer for me because i have culinary quality pots and they retain heat. after the milk was cool we added a small amount to the yogurt, "like when you make gravy," diana told me, "so lumps do not form." then we mixed it together and poured it into the canning jars. you have to keep the yogurt warm for an hour or two while it sets up so we put it in my oven. i have a warming feature that keeps it toasty. while the yogurt sat we gabbed about children, life, and everything else. i learned a lot about diana that day. and that was the best part of yogurt making, friends. i shared my batch with another girlfriend who made me preserves. she mentioned that the yogurt had a great taste to it. the store bought plain yogurts have a little bite to them but not mine. it is mellow and mixes well with anything. audrey loves it. i do not think i will make my next batch alone, yogurt is more fun with friends. and you need someone to entertain your child while you whisk.

under new management

joshua says i should post links to my blog on the lawrencian. i am uncertain if i will do that. it is not that i dislike readers but i think of stuff in the paper as being newsworthy and this is just my thoughts. my thoughts and cute pictures of my daughter. who goes to a news site for that? also, i am making a few changes to the ol' blog so if you like, or don't like, something please let me know.

adventures on the changing table

audrey learned to turn herself over on the changing table. she grabs the side with the opposite hand and pulls real hard. then she worms around until her knees are under her and she tries to move that way. she will not do this on the floor, just on the changing table. the first time she did it with joshua she bumped her head on the dresser and screamed for a bit. as soon as you get her on the changing table she has to do this. consequently, i am trying to dress a squirming baby or one who is backwards. i can try to turn her over to finish putting on a diaper or outfit but it usually results in her squirming more. if you have seen the movie sixteen candles then you will get the picture when i say dressing her is like samantha putting on her sister's shoe at the wedding. there should be an olympic event for this. she has also been real fussy the last two days and i asked joshua last night if we could trade her in on a quieter model. she is almost 7 months and really going strong.

24 June 2008

Go baby

She likes her walks. Now I know why. She chews on the straps.

23 June 2008

a mind of her own

there has been so much going on that i have not had time to blog about it. audrey and i are very busy women. we go until bedtime, then we sleep. speaking of sleep, audrey changed her sleep schedule suddenly this week. yesterday and today she slept until 5:30 for her feeding and then went back to bed until 8 or 8:30. this threw off the rest of the day so we ended up not having the last nap and taking shorter naps the rest of the day. i like the sleeping in part but i am not sure i want to lose the sleep time during the day. that is when i get stuff done. i may have to live with it. she has also been working on her pincher grasp and has gotten puffed cereal in her mouth on several occasions. it may not seem like much but this is the first step to feeding herself. food is still a challenge. i have been working on feeding her organic foods that i process myself. it is not that hard but it does take a little more time. i made her yogurt and she had steel cut oats yesterday. i need to go so i can feed precious her breakfast.

21 June 2008

Busy baby

I am typing mom, quit taking my picture.

typical saturday

we had a blast at the farmer's market. there were dogs and people to stare at, coffee for mom, and red carrots and turnips for baby. she is having trouble napping right now. the second nap of the day is supposed to be for around an hour and the last one 30 minutes. yesterday she got that confused and it looks to be the same today. i need to go so that i can finish getting ready so we can go grocery shopping. baby needs yogurt and bananas, mom needs cottage cheese, and dad needs diet mt. dew.

life lessons

the life of a baby is ever changing and there are so many things to learn. for instance, this week we have learned:
  1. water is for bathing in, not breathing
  2. daddy reads the best bedtime stories
  3. concrete is not a good place to learn to crawl
  4. mommy's toes do not come off
  5. tears almost always garner a hug
  6. daddy does not think about seasons when dressing baby
this last one has an accompanying picture.

it is june and 80-90 degrees each day. it may be hard to tell from the picture but the bottoms are fleece. she is going to die if i leave her in this outfit. but, he did get her up for me and dress her. and yesterday i was able to sleep in until 10. it was amazing.

summer time in lawrence

it was a great weekend. we went to the farmers market, played on the swings, celebrated fathers day, and went to dinner. then the baby slept at larissa's and joshua and i caught a movie. i am relaxed. i did have to work a bit this weekend because my employee has sporadic attendance. that was not fun. we are off to my breast feeding support group and then back to the office. our lives are so full. i will try to get more up later.

audrey and her dad

babies and trash

the life of a baby is ever changing, ever evolving. lil miss is sitting fairly well, trying to stand when you hold her up, and sort of attempting to crawl. that last one is sporadic. she is getting better about riding in the car on our way to the grocery store or the gym. and she still has a fondness for shopping. just the other day we spent hours looking for new toys and finally located a bag of wooden blocks and plastic connecting toys. she was pretty happy with the blocks. the plastic toys went to the tub with us and she sort of bats them around. her favorite toy in the tub is a disposable, red, plastic cup. of all the floating ducks, squirting frogs, and plastic connectors, she likes the cup best. why is it that the non-toys interest my baby more than the stuff i paid good money for? she loves foil wrappers, my stainless thermos, junk mail, and spoons. she also likes to chew on the reusable grocery bags i take with us to the store. her favorite is the purple one. she also likes the one made from used juice containers. it is colorful. i do not think i will be spending much more on toys but rather gathering up the odds and ends from around the house for her amusement. she has been a real delight today. which is good because there were a few days of terror. i will try to get up the cute picture i took this morning.

12 June 2008

more adventures in kansas

we are having a good time back in lawrence. it has taken a few days to get adjusted and we still have not unpacked. i should say me and not we, lil miss cannot take care of her own clothing yet. speaking of clothing, her dad has been getting up with her in the morning and dressing her before bringing her to me. this should be normal except he has the oddest way of dressing her. the first morning it was a pair of overalls, no shirt. the next it was a forth of july one piece. and this morning it was a small top and pant set that looked like pajamas and was decidedly too small. i redressed her today. i try not to say anything because he is helping and who can complain about that. it is just funny. it may have something to do with the fact that her clean laundry is sitting in a basket instead of hanging in the closet. i would work on the laundry but audrey has been very needy the last few days. today i can at lease set her down for small periods before she screams. i know it is a phase but i am tired today and i want her to play by herself with the cool blocks i found for her. at least she still naps, i should not complain.

07 June 2008

Card night

Old people can stay up late if there are cards involved.

saturday in the park

this trip has been great. my sister helps out a great deal with the baby, the cousins love to keep her entertained when we are on the road, and little miss is sleeping well now that she is used to her travel bed. we have spent so much time away from home she is starting to think that is her bed. i take it with me where ever we go and now i can put her down for a nap when she is tired rather than waiting until we get home. we all went to the pool today and every one had a good time except audrey. she screamed when we got in the pool so i moved to the toddler area and sat her at the edge. she screamed there as well. she finally learned to tolerate the water but not before i got beaned in the head with a water gun. a group of rowdy boys threw the toy in the air so high that when it hit me i was stunned for a moment. i had no idea what happened and it was all i could do not to drop the baby. my sister got in the pool and disiplined the boys because there was not a parent to be seen. after i recovered they started playing right in front of me and splashed water in the baby's face. i lost it then and told them to go to another area of the pool and stay out of my sight. i have a nice little knot on my forehead now from my relaxing day at the pool. war wounds from a saturday outing with the family.

world travelers

we are home, briefly. and she sleeps. for some reason when we fly with joshua she screams the entire way home from the airport. i have yet to figure out why. it may have something to do with the fact that several times she was almost asleep and joshua would yell at the radio. he has an opinion about everything. i kept trying to get him to turn down the radio so she could sleep but then he could not hear over her fussing so he would turn it up. it was self fulfilling. i need to unpack and repack for our trip to austin in the morning. and i mean texas this time. i had no idea there was another one until i found out my mother-in-law was from austin, minnesota. we may go there for the burial service for joshua's grandma. it is undecided. what we have planned is a trip to the lake cabin. baby gets to learn to swim in a cold minnesota lake. rhonda promises it will be warm. last time i was there i froze, in june. we just have to find some cheap and easy way to get to fargo by plane without 10 stops. no one goes to fargo so it is a little difficult. i found a cool product called google reader which pulls from all the blogs i read when there is a new post. that way i only have to visit one site for everything. check it out. more tips to come. i am having more fun with this blogging thing recently.

audrey's 6 month birthday

happy 6 months

so i have been publishing a lot of pictures without a lot of text. this is because i have finally learned how to mobile blog. i can take a picture with my phone and email it instantly to my blog. i can write but i found that sending pictures is easier. i hope this is of enjoyment to all. we are still in milwaukee enjoying the in-laws. i have been able to sleep in two mornings in a row. little miss gets up with grandma and i am able to have an extra 30 minutes to relax. today is audrey's 6 month birthday. we are thinking about having a little celebration. maybe we will get her a cupcake to gum.

gypsies

we are back from tulsa. but that is not where the fun ends. tomorrow we board a plane for milwaulkee and the in-laws. i love my in-laws so that part should be fun but the little one has been getting fussy for her bed and her sleep routine. i thought it might be a change she was making to her routine but now that we are back she is napping perfectly. i hope she is able to adjust because we will be gone for 7 days and then back for 1/2 a day and then down to austin to see my grandma and my sisters. we are traveling chics. joshua is going with us to milwaukee so that will be a nice family vacation. i am going to keep this short as i need to do a mountain of laundry before we leave. i will try to get pictures up later.

21 May 2008

hitting the road

so it has been a few days. i keep meaning to write, really, but i have been busy. you will forgive me, right? i promise it will not happen again, honest. i am a good blogger. the baby and i have been busy. we are getting ready for the trip home and that always takes time. i had to take the recycling to drop off so there would be room in the car. then i stopped to get a few items from target, mainly because i love target and i needed an excuse. i packed the baby's bag and started the laundry, and then she tried to break my toe. i already mentioned that. i do not think it is really broken. tomorrow i have a pedicure, an investors dinner, and i still need to clean out the fridge. i have not even had much time to take pictures of the baby. i did get a short video of her trying to crawl. joshua says she will hate me when she is 16. i do not think it will take that long. the video is up on youtube. i will try to get a link here soon. my user name is ivycassidy but you can also search by her name, audrey rose.

17 May 2008

babies are harmless

how can one so young cause so much trouble for everyone?
i broke my toe a few years back, stubbed it on a vacuum cleaner. i think i may have another broken toe. this time it was not my doing. the baby did it. really, she did. those cute photos of her eating in the little chair take place on the kitchen counter. she grabbed for a spoon in a mug as i was walking by and knocked the mug onto my toe. the nail is cracked. she just looked at me. joshua had to finish feeding her because i was too busy cussing. feeding, other than that one, are getting better. she eats better and will sometimes try new things. i got her to eat a little green beans and she ate some squash the other day. mostly she likes yogurt and bananas. and sweet potatoes.
check out my new gig:

i am a moderator for a local site joshua acquired. some fun we are having.

14 May 2008

solid foods continued

so i almost knocked myself out with the dryer door. i opened it to put the clothing from the washer in only to find that the washer was empty. i proceeded to fill the washer with what has to be the worst smelling diapers ever, trying to steer clear of the stench. that is when i came into contact with the dryer door, still open from earlier. i knocked my glasses off and bent them. if i end up with a black eye i need a better story. maybe i will say that joshua wanted me to do the dishes and i said no. i wonder if he will appreciate the humor in that...
summer is almost here and the little one is wearing her cute little dresses, if anything at all. she has continued with the fun solid foods, trying sweet potatoes, carrots, bananas, yogurt; and hating peas, and green beans. she is starting to eat three squares a day in addition to her nursings so she has put on a little weight. i call her chubba wubba. we will be in tulsa in a week for a family thing so we can visit the tulsa peoples. and everyone can pinch little chubba wubba's cheeks.

09 May 2008

peas

so i cleaned the house, mostly. i am still working on it but the upper level is clean, mostly. we are having a get-together tomorrow and joshua wanted the house to look decent. i just wanted to find all the laundry. i would wash it, and throw it in a big pile in the basement to be folded while watching a movie some night. i kept falling asleep so the pile got bigger. now when we want clean clothing we go 'shopping' for outfits in the basement. i feel like i am 13 again and hiding the piles of laundry from my mom so i do not have to fold them. come 3pm tomorrow everyone is going to see my laundry habits. audrey has tried to help. she screams at me when i take her down there, as if to say, "mom, time to put away the laundry. you have to set a good example for me." maybe that is not what she is saying, it might be in my head. i have a new picture for the viewing pleasure of all... this is what happens when you try to get peas into audrey.

03 May 2008

toys

we went to the farmer's market this morning. what a great idea! all kinds of people bake really good, local food and bring out their eggs, lettuce, meat, honey, and more. we purchased eggs, lettuce and wool yarn. i got the see a picture of the animal my wool came from. he was cute. audrey enjoyed seeing all of the dogs. she even got to pet a few. i really wish i had time to get her a dog. i think she would like an animal a great deal, probably more than i ever did. she is fascinated by every dog she sees. i am going to make time this week to visit the humane society to see if they need volunteers. that would be fun for both of us. all of the joy of a dog with none of the responsibility. and we would be helping out. i also wanted to add this photo, taken by and arranged by joshua. by arranged i mean that he arranged to have audrey play with all of her toys at once. and i do mean all of them. the picture does not show the entire play yard.

02 May 2008

new menu

so as promised...sweet potatoes.
this has become her new favorite food. however, for a child who has had nothing but mom's milk and cereal up 'til now, this is not a big surprise. the sweet potatoes are a nice orange color that she enjoys rubbing all over her face and sometimes spitting at me. not because she does not like them, she has just discovered how to spit. oh the joys of motherhood. why did someone not tell me to get a plastic wardrobe earlier? she drools, she spits, and sometimes she leaks. there is a nice sound that goes with the spitting too, a humming that could be soothing if she did not have sweet potatoes in her mouth. i will try to get a little video once the new camera shows up.
next on the menu, peas or avocado?
i have yet to decide.

01 May 2008

good times

if i avoid writing my papers do you think the professors will take the 'dog ate my homework' bit? i am so done with school and yet i am not finished. they will not give me my degree until i finish these classes. i want to just cry. i wonder if that will work? so i play the avoidance game. if i ignore it maybe it will go away. i am also avoiding cleaning the house, but that is a different story.
my little angel is learning to sit up. she still wobbles a great deal so, unlike joshua, i stay close so she does not hit her head on the coffee table when she topples. no, no, that never happened. honest.
the weather has turned nice for a brief period and she has pulled out her summer outfits. she mostly likes to chew on the edges of her dresses so i will need to keep her in those whenever possible. her 'singing voice' has increased as well. that is her father's term for the high pitched scream she emits when entertained, or tired. that is all for now. i will try to add info about the sweet potatoes soon. as larissa would say, 'good times.'

little miss has been a joy and a trial these last few weeks. we are learning to get along, this includes sleeping from 7pm until 3 or 4am. she has also thoroughly taken to the solid food concept and has started to assist me in those feedings. she grabs at the spoon and tries to shove it in her mouth for me. i am not certain if this is because i am not doing it fast enough or if she just needs to be in control. i am leaning toward the latter. we have taken several trips recently and audrey has faired very well i feel. the first was a trip home in which she pleasantly rode in a car for 5 hours there and then repeated the act home. most of the time she slept but there were quite a few periods of quiet play in her seat. our next trip involved several plan rides to what turned out to be an annex of mexico located in the south of texas. she did well then as well. mostly i nursed her while she slept in my arms. the last leg of the journey home was not so pleasant because she did not want to nurse but rather have her own place to sleep. eventually she calmed down and slept on my lap. this was not until all of the passengers had decided to throw us out as soon as the door could be wrangled open. then she screamed during the entire car ride home. i believe that for a 5 month-old she did very well. joshua, however, has decided never to travel with small children again. and for the amusement of all, i include this photo. it was taken recently during what i like to call 'naked baby hour.'

i am still having fun with the solid food thing. should feeding my child illicit such humor? obviously, i took more pictures. here is my favorite. she still looks at the camera with suspicion every time i bring it out. sleeping is still slowly getting better. she went down at 6pm yesterday and did not wake for her dream feed until 2am. then she slept until 6am. that made me happy. she is also asleep now. after a prolonged battle she decided to take a longer nap. i made have had a little influence in that decision. when i let her she will take 6 30 minute naps a day. i would rather she take 3 1-2 hour naps. i am currently winning this battle. it could turn on me at any moment though. we are going to a small town somewhere near corpus christy this weekend to be with joshua's grandma who is not doing well. travel is always fun with a baby. this trip will involve several hours on planes and in airports. i believe we even get to change planes. good times. i am wondering how i am going to pack everything. for instance, she eats in the cute little chair that helps her sit up. how am i going to get that in a suitcase? maybe joshua will know. actually, best not to ask him, he thinks there is little need for all of her stuff.

more sleep issues

nothing really exciting going on here. except the entire town is going crazy about the ncaa championship. the game is big news in a town that boasts the founder of basketball as its first coach. audrey and i are still working on sleeping. she has her good days and her bad. she mostly wakes me up a lot but i usually get to go right back to sleep as she is just crying in her sleep. tonight is no different. eventually she will actually sleep though the night and both of us will get some rest. i am reading a book by a woman who calls herself the baby whisperer. cheesiness aside it is actually a good book. she is british so the thing is full of references to mums and she keeps using the term ducky. supposedly it will help me get my baby on a routine in 2 weeks. we shall see.

she really is taking to the eating from a spoon thing. i only feed her solids in the evening and this morning she was eying my grits. i tried to tell her that grits are an acquired taste but she seemed to want some. maybe when she gets the hang of swallowing. on a happier note, we are all in various stages of sickness in this abode. i have allergies that have caused a cough and sore throat, audrey is teething with the accompanying runny nose and cough, joshua seems to have some sort of sympathy illness with unknown symptoms causing him to sleep a lot.

he was able to drag himself out of bed to go put a van downtown for the game. if you want to know about lawrence, ks read the ljworld.com website today and see how the town is preparing for the game. for instance, no missiles are allowed downtown tonight and you must be at the restaurant no later than noon if you want a table for the 8pm game. i bought audrey a shirt last week before the game and she is getting a lot of laughs for it when we go out. i am curious about downtown and may try to get down there some time today before bedtime. we will be asleep before the game starts so do not wake us with congrats when ku wins.

'solids'

several items of note: audrey had her first 'solid' food, we hired a nanny, sleeping is getting better, joshua is now working from home. also, i made a lasagna. this last item is major for me. i have tried and failed several times to make one and this time joshua had seconds, always a good sign. he even used one of my favorite lines while dishing his second helping, 'beware of showing competence.' i do not mind making dinners for him if he will eat them instead of poking and saying it is fine and then never touching it again. on another note, we went to the doctor this week for audrey's 4 month check up with it's accompanying round of shots. the shots went better this time but lil miss is not gaining weight as quick as they would like. the doctor strongly encouraged solids so we started with a little rice cereal. the instructions call for 1tbsp of cereal and 4-5 tbsp of liquid. this makes a runny mess that could hardly be considered solid. she had fun with it and joshua took a few pictures. they are up on my flickr if anyone cares or i will try to load one here soon.

the internet is infinite

I have been invited to a new site to share books. This sounds like a great idea since I am constantly recommending books to friends. If you would like to join me the site is Goodreads.

I have just started using it so I do not know much about it yet.

lil miss and her easter dress

easter2, originally uploaded by krisadair.

it is hard to see in this photo but it is a cute dress. it has little lambs on the front and is made of cotton. i love the matching bloomers and, apparently, so does audrey. she would not leave the dress alone and kept pulling it up to taste it. reminds me a a bit george used to do about little girls pulling up their dresses. she always said it was a trait women should not give up, that they would get further if they randomly pulled their dresses up over their heads. my little one certainly looks cute with her dress up. i wonder how i will feel about that in 15 years?

too girlie

it is official, she slept through the night. of course the crazy people who decide call sleeping through the night more than 5 hours. i do not believe waking me at 4am should be celebrated. i should have gone to bed after her 11pm feeding and maybe i would be happier about it. joshua wanted to watch tv together, then we decided a little adult relations would be nice and it was much later before i went to bed. i hope she can repeat the sleeping performance tonight and then i can join her. i do not even know what 6 hours in a row feels like.
today we will put lil miss in her easter dress and take pictures for grandma. joshua complains that i am making her too girlie by putting her in a dress. she usually wears jeans so i am uncertain as to why a dress one day is a problem. my problem is that she has learned to scream. it is not a cry but a high pitched scream and she loves to do it. i think she just likes the sound of her own voice. i am not complaining, i love her voice.

a&k

a&k, originally uploaded by krisadair.

Mom and baby playing together. We hung out in Tulsa with my sister, I got a new tattoo and shopped for fabric with my step-mom. All was well until my return to the mad daily life of Lawrence. I have tried to stop working and keep failing miserably. This time maybe it will last. We hired a new person and Joshua promptly fired me. There is so much else to do around the house and I still need to finish school work. And I could use a decent amount of sleep.

home again

after a four hour drive we are home. it was great to see the family and spend time in tulsa but it is nice to be home. the drive was relatively easy as the little one slept most of the way. she awoke once and demanded food at a truck stop. we stopped, she ate, and we went on. i am happy to be back in hopes that she sleeps better. we had a rough time sleeping at my dad's house; the last night she woke up every 30 minutes to an hour all night. at 3:45 my step-mom took over for me and i went to bed. if i could have only explained to audrey that i was driving the next day and she needed to let me sleep. she is sleeping now and i hope she stays that way. i am off to slumber land myself. it is good to be home, even though mine smells like paint right now.

mommy brain

i went shopping today to get a slow release food for the fish and new bras for me. my little angel went with and i had her in the front sling. everyone kept stopping me to look at her and marvel at the way she was being carried. it was like they had never seen a mother strap a baby to her chest and go about regular chores. it did end up a fiasco when i misplaced my purse and had to go retrieve it from customer service. i explained to the nice man behind the counter that i used to be smart and be able to remember things but then i had a child and now i have mommy brain. he smiled politely at me and said he understood. maybe it happens often in his store. some woman sets her purse down to look for a coupon for diapers because she is traveling and can not use the cloth ones on the road. she is thinking about all of these things and trying to decide which diapers would work best for her baby and then she calmly leaves her purse on the shelf. i bet the mother who found my purse and turned it in understood, i bet she has done the same. that is what i think anyway.

love

i never knew love like this until i had a child. it hurts sometimes it is so strong. i just went to check on her to make sure she was ok while she slept. i think part of my problem is that i miss my dad so much. i really miss him. he should be here to share in my joy. i remember the look on his face when my brother was born. you never saw a prouder father. he was a good grandpa too. i thought it would get easier but it seems to be getting harder. maybe that is because i bottled it all up and did not deal with it when it happened.
